The International Olive Council, or IOc for short, is an interantional,intergovernmental, non-profit organization set up in 1959 under the auspics of hte United Nations. It is responsible for administering the succession of Internaitonal Agrrements on Olive Oil and Table Olives concluded since 1956 the latest one was negotiated in 2005 with the aim of ensuring the optimal development of olive growing and olive products, i.e. olive oil and table olives.
The membership of Council is made up of countries which are the producers of which have interests in olive growing : Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, iran, Israel, Jordon, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Serbia, Syria, Tunisa and the European Union with all its 27 Member States, among which many olive-growing nations ( Span, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Slovenia, Cyprus, France, Malta).
The Council has observers too, amongs them India.
The Council has its headquarters in Madrid, in Span. Its five official languages are Arabic, English, French, Italian and Spanish. The Executive Secretariat is the driving power of the Organisation and implements IOC decisions and global strategy.
The Council has become a key institution by carrying out tasks in a range of actions areas:
1- Standardising international trade: norms and procedures for olive products.
2- Promoting the beneficial nutritional properties and gastronomics attributes of olives products.
3- Consumer information and education.
4- Protecting olive oil and table olives quality.
5- Fostering international cooperation to provide active support for olive products.
